CHARLES C. VAN HOOSE, III
2018

Chuck started playing racquetball later in life than most players (38years old). He instantly fell in love with the game and realized that he needed something to refuel and replace his competitive drive that had previously satisfied him through organized sports. Those sports started in grade school and continued through college (baseball, track, football, cross country, and wrestling).

He started and has been the sole responsible director for the Motor City Rollout tournament since 2001 (18 years and running). The MCR is usually one of the best tournaments each year and is noted to be extremely player friendly. He was voted Ram “Contributor of the Year” in 2005-2006, the “Tournament Director of the Year” in 2014-2015, and again in 2015-2016.

He started participation in the Michigan Senior Olympic State Games in 1998 and has continued to the present. He became the Tournament Director of Racquetball for the State Games in 2007 and continues to this day. He also worked with the State Director and National Director to finally get the National Senior Games sanctioned by USA Racquetball. He continues to promote participation in racquetball through the Senior Olympics.

He became a sponsored player and the Team Leader for the State of Michigan for E-Force Racquetball in 2010 and continues in that role. He is responsible for the nomination and recruitment of players that he feels will best represent both E-Force and for Team Michigan Racquetball.

As a Player, Chuck has played in many National, State, Regional, and local events in which he medaled and represented the State of Michigan proudly. In total, that’s 6 State, 4 Regional, 1 US open, 16 Olympic, 16 local championships and 53 second place finishes. Chuck has played in more than120 tournaments. He was a part of Team Hastings and played in tournaments every weekend for 5 straight years. He has played in leagues for 30 years and continues to play weekly.

“There are still things I would like to accomplish as a Leader and Player. I would like to put a few State, Regional, and National titles under my belt before I simply can’t play anymore. I would like to get involved with the RAM board and possibly with the State Senior Olympic board to a larger degree. I will continue to promote racquetball through my association with E-Force as Team Leader for Michigan, my league play, and continuing to run the Motor City Rollout every year”

When asked what people will remember about him, Chuck replied: “That I was a Fierce, but fair competitor and I was always promoting and giving back to the sport of racquetball”

Steve has been playing racquetball competitively in the open division for the last 40 years in 5 different decades. He started playing the game back in the mid 1970’s at the local YMCA in Brainerd, Minnesota. Steve and his best friend would get up and play before school. His love of the game grew quickly as he played 6 days a week. Back then, there were tournaments almost every weekend, he would play in as many as he could. He and his wife moved to Michigan in 1989 to work and start their family. All 4 of his boys have played racquetball and participated in a few tournaments. He continued playing racquetball in Michigan by playing in leagues, the travel league in the Detroit Metro area and in numerous tournaments. As he soon found out, Michigan had some of the best players in the country and winning tournaments was not easy. But he kept playing, competing and truly enjoying the game of racquetball.

His first Michigan State Singles Open Division Title came in 2001 at the age of 37. Sixteen years later, in 2017 at the age of 53, he won his 2nd State Open Singles Title. He won a State OpenDoublesTitlein2003. In 2015, Steve won National Titles at the Senior Games in the 50+Singles division and the 50+ Mixed Open Doubles division. In the past 3years, hewas able to win 2 IRT Pro Singles Tier 5 events and place 2nd in a 3rd IRT event. He also has 2 USRA Regional Championships, 10 additional RAM State Singles and Doubles “Age Group” Championships and numerous other tournament championships in the state of Michigan.

Of the 90 tournaments that he placed 1st or 2nd in over the last 40 years, almost two-thirds of them were in the last 15 years. His consistency and determination really paid off as he has gotten older. In total, he won 53 tournaments and placed 2nd in another 37. For him, it has never been just about competing and playing the game. He realizes what the game has given back to him in the form of physical and mental health. He is grateful for the many people he has met and the friendships that have come from his participation in racquetball. He was awarded RAM “Sportsperson of the Year” in 2010, “Male Player of the Year” in 2014 and 2018. In his mind, racquetball is the best sport there is.

When asked what people will remember about him, Steve replied: “That I always played hard, had fun and was respectful to the game of racquetball and the people who played it.”

The fruit of that effort was many close friends and lasting relationships which outweigh any athletic goals or accomplishments.

I am honored and humbled to be included with many athletes and leaders in the sport of racquetball. My racquetball family, have abundantly given back to me much more than my contributions. I will be forever grateful for this opportunity.

“Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”

ROBIN BASIL 2024

Since picking up a racquet in 2002, racquetball has been more than just a sport to me; it has been a source of enduring friendships and personal growth. From the moment I started playing, the game became a huge part of my life. The game taught me resilience, discipline, and the value of giving it all you’ve got, even when the chips are down. My journey on the court started indoors at Lifetime Fitness Troy and Players Athletic Club,

and soon grew to a love of the outdoor game at Belle Isle and St Clair Shores. I’ve had so many on court mentors over the years that helped my game develop that I am extremely grateful for. The camaraderie amongst us players created a unique bond that went well beyond the game itself which I will be forever grateful. Here are some of the many tournament accomplishments.
